Line-editing your own work - a fiction writer’s guide

Congratulations on reaching the editing stage!

So what’s next? You can send your early draft to an editor… or you can dive into that first edit yourself, gaining extra pride and satisfaction, and definitely saving money.

But where do you start? What do you look for – and why does it matter? How do you see some of the issues when they came from your head in the first place?

This line-editing workshop will set you on the path to confident revision/self-editing, helping you look at your own work with a reader’s eye.

What’s involved?

The 2-part workshop covers:

  • principles, pitfalls & problem-solving

  • plenty of practice examples

  • peer support & opinion

  • professional feedback on your project

Who’s it for?

Ideally, you have written at least 20,000 words in one work of fiction (or collection of stories). I’m particularly looking to work with writers who may not have formal learning of creative writing skills, but it will suit any author wanting to improve confidence in editing their own work.

This is a very small group workshop – 3 or 4 writers only. Please be prepared to share your own writing with others in a supportive, constructive environment, and to give considered feedback in return.

The workshop covers flow, clarity and suitability for the audience, at a paragraph/sentence level (line-editing). We will not be looking at overall plot and character development (structural editing). So you need to be happy with your plot!

Where and when?

This is a 2-part workshop, with a week between each session. The next editing workshop will take place at:

The Mix, 127 Ipswich Street, Stowmarket, Suffolk. IP14 1BB.

On: Thurs 3rd April & Thurs 10th April 2025

Session times: 10.15am - 1.15pm

Price

£125 for the full 2-day workshop (ie, 6 hours)*. The price also includes:

  • a take-away pack of editing tips

  • a professional mark-up of 500 words of your book

  • delicious cakes and hot drinks to keep you going throughout the morning!
